Updating Our Spaces

The most recent Fund-A-Need at Wearin’ the Green launched a fundraising drive to renovate our building on Hermitage Avenue including the renovation of our chapel. The following information details the steps that will be taken to meet our temporary needs as the school expansion takes place through our Enrich – Expand – Grow Capital Campaign and we plan for the long term utilization and upkeep of our parish facilities.

Plan Details:  There are 4 components of Growing into our Future which functioning together to will allow Saint Andrew School to maintain our small class size:

  • 1.      Conversion of the current third floor art room into a Middle School classroom.  This important step will provide a classroom space that is essential to maintaining small classroom sizes and the differentiated instruction discussed above.  Given our current enrollment, without a new classroom it would be difficult if not impossible to maintain the educational environment we have today.
  • 2.      Relocation of Mrs. Sterenberg’s outstanding art program into a newly created art studio located in the current PreK classroom.  We are extremely fortunate to have such a robust program of Art Education taught by a teacher with a Master’s Degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  The relocation of the art program to the current first floor PreK classroom will provide this program with a space worthy of the content being taught to our children.  This dedicated space will allow access to water and ample storage, both necessities for an art program of this caliber.
  • 3.      Creation of a new “Early Childhood Education Center” in the Social Hall.  The Social Hall located in the lower level of the Hermitage building will be renovated to create interim classroom space for both our Junior Kindergarten and PreK programs.  Renovations will include the addition of a center wall to create two large classroom spaces and the implementation of new fire safety measures.  Each classroom will have access to a bathroom facility and the use of a shared kitchen.
  • 4.      Creation of a new and improved “Community Hall.”  With the renovation of the current Social Hall into an Early Childhood Education Center comes the need to relocate the function of the current Social Hall.  To this end, the 2nd floor of the Hermitage building would be renovated into a “Community Hall,” offering a multi-use space for activities such as Irish dance, scouting, and much more.  The footprint of the current chapel space would be reduced by approximately seventy five percent to make room for this Community Hall.  Important elements of this renovation include asbestos abatement, a new floor, removal of all but a few rows of pews, the addition of a kitchenette and bathroom, and more.
